Diversity of Organisms

« Back to Glossary Index

It is thought that the number of species of organisms living on the Earth is between 12 and 100 million. Of that number, only about 1.4 million have been identified. The rest are either yet to be discovered or identified, or there is some disagreement as to how they should be classified. All of these known species have been grouped using the system of classification in a hierarchical system. This reflects the very rich diversity of organisms and allows us to begin to study and understand more about them
