Environment

« Back to Glossary Index

There is a rich and varied range of habitats in the world which are home to many different creatures. The conditions and surroundings that exist in these habitats is referred to as an environment. Creatures make full use of their environment in order to survive. Environment can be:

  • a source of energy;
  • a source of raw materials;
  • a place to live and shelter;
  • somewhere to deposit waste.

Unlike most animals, humans have the ability to change their environment in order to suit their way of living. As we so often see this has an impact on other living things and can sometimes cause negative effects. As more and more people have become aware of the effect humans can have on the environment there are ongoing demands for changes to be made. One example of this is the debate over fossil fuels, their depletion and search for sustainable alternatives.
