In order to have survived and for the continuation of the species, animals and plants have adapted to the environment in which they have lived, their habitats. This adaptation includes responding to the climate and to the availability of food supplies and predators. In fact, adaptation can describe any of the features or characteristics of a living thing which help it to survive and can be described as being:

  • functional – adaptations that have enabled survival in different climates;
  • structural – adaptations that have allowed plants and animals to survive in different physical ways.
