Food chain

« Back to Glossary Index

Plants and animals within an ecosystem rely on other plants and animals for their food. The relationships between them can be seen in terms of a food chain. An example of a food chain would be, plant > rabbit > fox, since rabbits feed on plants and the fox feeds on the rabbit. The fox together with all other animals are unable to produce their own food so need to seek food and are called consumers. Plants however do produce their own food so are called producers.
